| The Centre for Process Innovation
The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) develops products, processes, services and businesses in the process and advanced manufacturing sectors.
CPI significantly reduces the risks associated with innovation. We operate a unique approach, stimulating market-led innovation, bringing together market ‘pull’ from industry with technology ‘push’ from academia to address the real needs of our industries. We work to create new and strong supply chains in the UK by instigating and developing multi-party projects.
CPI has established two national technology centres – the Printable Electronics Technology Centre (PETEC) and the Sustainable Processing Centre (SUSPROC). PETEC and SUSPROC provide help to bring new products and technologies to market quickly by using our open access physical assets to transform research into a viable commercial process.
SUSPROC helps companies and organisations test, develop and scale up sustainable processes and energy solutions. Its practical and commercial approach is designed to enable customers to enter valuable and new markets as quickly as possible, without ever losing sight of the need for commercial competitiveness.

Avantium develops "Furanics", a new generation of biobased plastics and fuels. Furanics can be produced from biomass such as sugars and other carbohydrates. Avantium's Furanics plastics (such as a green alternative to PET) can be produced cheaper than oil-based plastics and they have attractive properties with the potential to replace traditional plastics in many existing applications. Avantium's Furanics fuel program aims to develop a new generation of fuels (e.g. diesel, jet fuel) with both excellent properties (such as high energy density and mixability with conventional fuels) and competitive production costs. Furanics are a sustainable alternative for materials and fuels that are currently produced from crude oil.
